Hello.

It's me again.

Yeah, sorry, I don't post here very much, do I?

I always mean to, but you know, work has to come first. And believe it or not, my family likes to see me sometimes too. And then there's football, of course. And sometimes I even read.

But I figured it was time at least for an update on what I've been up to lately and what books I've got coming up.

THOR GOD OF THUNDER is still thundering along. Issue #11 just came out, wrapping up the story that started way back in issue #1. Next up, our amazing artist Esad Ribic takes a bit of a break and the great Ron Garney joins the book for a big arc focusing on Malekith the evil Dark Elf, who just happens to be the villain in the upcoming THOR: THE DARK WORLD motion picture (Buy copies for your movie-going friends!). I gotta say, the response to GOD OF THUNDER so far has really blown me away. It seems to be one of the best received books I've ever done. Which is great for me, because I'm having one hell of a time and hope to stick around for a really long run.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN is about to wrap up one of our biggest arcs yet, the "Hellfire Saga," which ties up some of the plot threads that have been dangling for a long time now (I've written almost 40 issues of this book so far. Can't believe that. It's been a crazy couple of years.) After the "Hellfire Saga" we launch right into "Battle of the Atom," the year's big X-Men crossover event. Coming out of that, I'll still be writing WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, still putting those poor kids through hell. But I'll also be taking on...

AMAZING X-MEN. A new series, featuring awesome art by the awesome Ed McGuinness. Our first arc: "The Quest for Nightcrawler." 'Nuff said.

SOUTHERN BASTARDS is the first creator-owned series I've had announced since SCALPED wrapped up. It's also my first work for Image. Think SCALPED, but with rednecks. All drawn by my pal Jason Latour. No release date yet, though we're shooting for early next year.

I was thrilled to be invited by Scott Snyder to write a short story for his upcoming AMERICAN VAMPIRE anthology. It was great to work for Vertigo again, even if it was just a few pages.

Other than that... there are a few other things I'm already working on. A couple more creator-owned projects, as well as some new stuff for Marvel. But that'll all have to stay seeeeecret for just a little bit longer.

Um, what else?

I'm reading the Song of Ice and Fire books. Already mourning the loss of Breaking Bad as it winds down. Ready for some football (Roll Tide!).

If you want me to scribble on your comics, the only other show I'll be doing this year is my friend Tony Moore's Cincy Comicon in September. So bring your shit and I'll be happy to devalue it for you. I'm sure I'll be doing a few cons next year. Don't know what they'll be yet though.

But anyway, that's what I'm up to. How about you?

Been a busy month. Jesus. X-MEN SCHISM is officially wrapped, as of today. Now I only have two other Super Secret New Marvel Projects on which to work.

I've added a new stop on my convention schedule for the year. I'll be making my first trip to the homeland of Wolverine himself when I head to FanExpo Canada in August. Can't wait to meet ya, Canucklehead comic book fans.

Been catching up on my comic reading. Scott Snyder is killing it on DETECTIVE COMICS. As is Remender on X-FORCE. Gotta be my two favorite current books, along with Grant Morrison's ever amazing Batman work. 

Making my way through the Harry Potter movies with my son. Just watched #5, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, which I thought was by far the best one yet. Love the big wizarding battle at the end. Makes Gandalf vs. Saruman in FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING look like a bit of awkward fumbling.

I recently deleted my old Facebook page and created a couple new ones. The old one had gotten rather unwieldy and useless. The new fan page I made is here. I have a personal page as well, but that's only for folks I actually know, so I can keep up with out-of-town friends and such.

Go Mavs. God, I hate the Lakers.

Knee-deep in work today. Trying to finish up my second issue of a super-big super-secret new project. Look for an announcement soon, probably at Wonder Con.

It's Wednesday, so if you're going to the comic store look for PUNISHERMAX #11, the long-awaited conclusion to the "Bullseye" arc. It has blood and vomit and severed fingers and other such lovelieness.

Also, there's a new edition of my WHERE THE HELL AM I column over at CBR about how sometimes writing doesn't go as planned. It's called "Sometimes It Sucks," though hopefully the column itself doesn't.

Back to work now. Then a trip to the comic store. Then sleep and dreams of a new NFL CBA.

My current workload:

SCALPED -- 37 issues on the shelves and still plenty more story left to tell.  The first big arc this year is "Unwanted," drawn by Guera.

PUNISHER MAX -- Second arc, titled "Bullseye," is coming out right now.  Third arc will be titled "Frank." And that ain't the end of the story.
 
WOLVERINE -- WOLVERINE: WEAPON X is winding down and in its place comes WOLVERINE. First arc is "Wolverine Goes to Hell" which is exactly what it sounds like.  Looking forward to a nice long run on this book.

ASTONISHING SPIDER-MAN & WOLVERINE -- Having loads of fun with this.  A big, batshit-crazy six-issue story with the chance for more to follow.  Already know how I wanna follow it up.

PROJECT TO BE NAMED LATER -- Just recently wrote the first issue of a secret new mini-series featuring a character I've never written before.  Have no idea when this'll be announced.  Sorry to be a tease.

No screenplays or teleplays in the works for me right now.  I'm all comics, all the time.  And loving every second of it.  Thanks for reading.

By my count, I had 36 comics published in 2008, plus a couple of short stories. All told I got to write a lot of different characters: Ghost Rider, Wolverine, John Constantine, Black Panther, The Penguin, American Eagle and the Punisher, in addition to the denizens of the Prairie Rose rez in SCALPED, of course.

In 2009, I should have at least as many comics out, if not more, but I won't be doing as many short stints on different titles. Instead I'll be focusing on a handful of ongoing series, as follows:

SCALPED -- 2009 will be taken up almost entirely by two big arcs. "High Lonesome" starts in January's #25 and lasts five issues, though it's really more a collection of stand-alone issues than it it a cohesive arc. After that, we begin a pivotal arc entitled "The Gnawing." As I've said before, this is when the shit really hits the fan. This is what we've been building toward in these first two years, and this arc also sets the stage for everything to follow.

GHOST RIDER -- I should have 11 more issues of GHOST RIDER out in 2009 to wrap up my run, and I think they'll be my best issues yet on the title. In particular I'm excited about the issues my buddy Tony Moore is drawing, starting with #33 in March.

WOLVERINE: WEAPON X -- This new ongoing kicks off in April, and I'm hoping to have a very long run on this. This will be me getting to tell ever story I've ever wanted to tell with Wolverine.

OTHER MARVEL ONGOING -- Later in 2009 I'll also be starting a run on an undisclosed Marvel series. All I'll say is that it's a dream project of mine in every way, from the series itself to the artist I'm getting to work with to the villains they're letting me use. Can't wait.

ASSORTED ONE-SHOTS AND SUCH -- I'll probably also have a few one-shots out here and there. I've been working on one and may already have another lined up. Work also continues on a graphic novel I've been doing for Oni. You probably won't see that in 2009 though.

All in all, it sounds like enough to keep me busy. Speaking of which, I gotta get back to work now.

Just a sitrep on what all I'm working on right now.

GHOST RIDER -- Things really ramp up beginning with issue #27, and I think the five part arc that begins there will be the best thing I've done on the book so far. I'm introducing a lot of new characters and writing some outrageous fight scenes, and man, I can't wait to write the ending. It's a doozy.

WOLVERINE: MANIFEST DESTINY -- In the second issue of this mini I get to give Wolverine a beat-down like he ain't seen since I don't know when. And I also get to bring back the Sons of the Tiger. Anybody out there remember them?

SCALPED -- Still need to finish up the "Gravel in Your Guts" arc that begins with #21, then it's on to a big arc with some more of those stand-alone character-driven issues that our readers seem to love, including looks at some characters we haven't previously focused on, like Agent Nitz and Shunka, Red Crow's right hand man.

PUNISHER CHRISTMAS SPECIAL -- Just in case I ain't already going to hell when I die, this book will most assuredly reserve me a special place there. You've been warned.

UN-NAMED X-RELATED ONE-SHOT -- This hasn't been announced yet so I don't wanna say too much, just that it's a character I haven't written before and it features the only Marvel universe villain I know of who's from Alabama.

ONI GRAPHIC NOVEL -- Things look to be picking up on the graphic novel I've started working on for Oni. Don't want to spoil too much about it since it's still pretty far in the future, but I will say it's about one of my favorite subjects in the entire world: college football.

NEW PROJECTS FOR NEXT YEAR -- Just this past week I've learned about a couple of sweet gigs that look to be lining up for me next year at Marvel. As fun as this year has been for me, next year is looking to be even better. Stay tuned. And thanks for the support.
