One of my all-time favorite comic book writers died this week. Steve Gerber, who for years stood head and shoulders above most everyone else working in mainstream comics, and whose audacious imagination and gift for scathing satire remain unrivaled even today. Sad to see him go.
There was time in the 70's when my misguided but well meaning Mom wouldn't let me read super hero comics (long story). She was more than happy though to buy me Howard the Duck, the most subversive thing on the stands and spinner racks, comics or otherwise. I told Steve that story and he got a kick out of it.
